The United Nations General Assembly has voted 164-1 to adopt the new world map that more accurately reflects the true size of Africa, with only the United States voting against and six countries abstaining.
The resolution promotes the Equal Earth projection, which reduces the distortion of the widely used Mercator map. Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, despite appearing roughly similar in size on Mercator maps.
The resolution is not legally binding and does not ban Mercator, but encourages its replacement in education and other settings.
